Life is Small

Sonny Duluth sells watches at the mall. He has not seen his son in seven years.

The reunion happens in a public park, a week before Christmas, in eighty degrees, with a strand of colored lights sagging over the parking lot. The son is bleeding. He is sitting in his own truck and a plumber has the keys and will not give them back, because the plumber’s wife says she saw him do something obscene where children were playing. The son says it was not like that. A police officer arrives with law school flashcards in her hand and a con law final at eight o’clock, and no patience for any of them.

Sonny has one afternoon and nothing to bargain with. What he has is a father’s heart and a habit of talking, and neither one is going to be enough.

Life Is Small is a dark comedy by Douglas Gearhart, who served three tours in Iraq as an enlisted Soldier. It is not a war play. It is a play about masculinity, shame, and what people will do to avoid calling a thing by its name. It is very funny, and it does not let you off.

Four actors. Three Saturdays. A room where the actors are ten feet away and nobody can look at their phone.
